Years When S60 Fuel Economy Changed
Most years look a lot like the one before. These are the years where the EPA numbers moved in a way that matters if you're shopping for a used S60.
- 2002: All-wheel drive becomes available. The best all-wheel drive version is rated at 20 MPG combined.
- 2015: The top combined rating rises to 29 MPG, up from 24 MPG the year before.
- 2019: A plug-in hybrid version arrives, rated at 31 MPG combined when running on gas alone.
How the S60 Compares
The EPA rated 22 compact cars for 2025. The best S60 version, at 30 MPG combined, ties for 8th with 4 other models of 22. Combined ratings in the class run from 17 to 50 MPG, with a median of 30. Plug-in hybrids and electric models are ranked separately.

S60 MPG Questions
Which S60 year gets the best gas mileage?
The 2023 and 2024 S60 T8 AWD Recharge holds the top EPA rating at 31 MPG combined (30 city, 33 highway). That's its gas-only rating as a plug-in hybrid. Among 2025 models, the S60 T8 AWD is rated at 31 MPG combined.
What's the best gas mileage from a non-hybrid S60?
The 2022 to 2024 S60 B5 with the 2.0L 4-cylinder and front-wheel drive is rated at 30 MPG combined (26 city, 35 highway).
Is there still a gas-only S60?
Yes. The 2025 S60 lineup includes 2 gas-only versions, rated 28 to 30 MPG combined.
Does all-wheel drive hurt S60 fuel economy?
A little. On the 2025 S60, the best front-wheel drive version is rated at 30 MPG combined and the best all-wheel drive version at 28 MPG.
Why doesn't my S60 match the EPA numbers?
EPA ratings come from standardized lab tests so every car is measured the same way. Your results depend on speed, climate, idling, cargo, tire pressure and upkeep. The ratings are best for comparing one car against another. To track your own numbers, try the MPG calculator.

Where These Numbers Come From
Cedrick Reese built this page from the EPA fuel economy file published on fueleconomy.gov. It has 123 ratings for the S60 from 2001 to 2025, and every one of them is shown in the table. Each row in the table links to the matching EPA vehicle record, so you can check any figure against the source. Ratings from before 2008 use the EPA's revised estimates, which put older vehicles on the same scale as newer ones. Plug-in hybrid figures in the table are the gas-only ratings, since those are the ones you can compare with a regular car. When the EPA posts an updated file with new model years or corrected ratings, this page is rebuilt from it. The cost calculator uses the gas price you enter rather than a national average, so the result fits where you live.
Ratings on this page come from the EPA file downloaded on October 1, 2026.
