Cooper MPG Over the Years
Each bar shows the range of combined MPG across every Cooper configuration the EPA rated that year, from the thirstiest version to the most efficient. Hover or tap a year to see the numbers. Electric versions are rated in MPGe, so they're left out of the chart and listed in the table instead.
Years When Cooper Fuel Economy Changed
Most years look a lot like the one before. These are the years where the EPA numbers moved in a way that matters if you're shopping for a used Cooper.
- 2003: The top combined rating rises to 28 MPG, up from 25 MPG the year before.
- 2007: The top combined rating rises to 31 MPG, up from 28 MPG the year before.
- 2020: An electric Cooper joins the lineup at 108 MPGe combined, with up to 110 miles of EPA range.
How the Cooper Compares
The EPA rated 18 subcompact cars for 2026. The best Cooper version, at 32 MPG combined, ranks 2nd of 18. Combined ratings in the class run from 18 to 44 MPG, with a median of 25. Plug-in hybrids and electric models are ranked separately.
| Rank | Model | Combined |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Honda Prelude | 44 MPG |
| 2 | MINI Cooper | 32 MPG |
| 3 | BMW 4 Series | 31 MPG |
| 4 | BMW 2 Series | 30 MPG |
| 4 | MINI John Cooper Works | 30 MPG |
What Does a Cooper Cost to Fuel or Charge?
Pick a Cooper, then enter your gas price (or electricity rate for an electric version) and how much you drive. The math uses the EPA city and highway ratings, weighted by how much of your driving happens in each.
Cooper MPG Questions
Which Cooper year gets the best gas mileage?
The 2014 Cooper (3-doors) holds the top EPA rating at 33 MPG combined (29 city, 39 highway). Among 2026 models, the Cooper C 2 Door is rated at 32 MPG combined.
Is there still a gas-only Cooper?
Yes. The 2026 Cooper lineup includes 6 gas-only versions, rated 30 to 32 MPG combined.
How efficient is the electric Cooper?
The most efficient 2024 Cooper SE Hardtop 2 door is rated at 110 MPGe combined, which works out to 30.7 kWh per 100 miles. Its EPA range is 114 miles.
Why doesn't my Cooper match the EPA numbers?
EPA ratings come from standardized lab tests so every car is measured the same way. Your results depend on speed, climate, idling, cargo, tire pressure and upkeep. The ratings are best for comparing one car against another. To track your own numbers, try the MPG calculator.

Where These Numbers Come From
Every figure on this page comes from the U.S. EPA fuel economy dataset on fueleconomy.gov, pulled together by Cedrick Reese. The file lists 244 ratings for the MINI Cooper from 2002 to 2027. Each row in the table links to the matching EPA vehicle record, so you can check any figure against the source. Ratings from before 2008 use the EPA's revised estimates, which put older vehicles on the same scale as newer ones. Electric versions are rated in MPGe, the EPA's miles-per-gallon equivalent, and the table also shows their official range. When the EPA posts an updated file with new model years or corrected ratings, this page is rebuilt from it. The cost calculator uses the gas or electricity price you enter rather than a national average, so the result fits where you live.
Ratings on this page come from the EPA file downloaded on October 1, 2026.
