GMC Sierra MPG by Year
Here's the official EPA GMC Sierra MPG for every engine and drivetrain from 1989 to 2026.
Sierra MPG by Year and Version
The EPA has rated 783 configurations of the Sierra across gas, hybrid, electric, diesel and natural gas versions. Trucks come in a lot of engine and drivetrain combinations, so pick a year to narrow the list.

Sierra MPG Over the Years
Each bar shows the range of combined MPG across every Sierra configuration the EPA rated that year, from the thirstiest version to the most efficient. Hover or tap a year to see the numbers. Electric versions are rated in MPGe, so they're left out of the chart and listed in the table instead.
Years When Sierra Fuel Economy Changed
Most years look a lot like the one before. These are the years where the EPA numbers moved in a way that matters if you're shopping for a used Sierra.
- 2004: The first hybrid Sierra shows up in the EPA data, rated at up to 17 MPG combined.
- 2009: The top combined rating rises to 21 MPG, up from 17 MPG the year before.
- 2020: The top combined rating rises to 26 MPG, up from 21 MPG the year before.
- 2025: An electric Sierra joins the lineup at 64 MPGe combined, with up to 390 miles of EPA range.
How the Sierra Compares
The EPA rated 12 full-size pickups for 2026. The best Sierra version, at 25 MPG combined, ties for 1st with 1 other model of 12. Combined ratings in the class run from 19 to 25 MPG, with a median of 22. Plug-in hybrids and electric models are ranked separately.
| Rank | Model | Combined |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chevrolet Silverado | 25 MPG |
| 1 | GMC Sierra | 25 MPG |
| 3 | Ford F150 | 24 MPG |
| 4 | Ford Ranger | 23 MPG |
| 4 | Toyota Tacoma | 23 MPG |
What Does a Sierra Cost to Fuel or Charge?
Pick a Sierra, then enter your gas price (or electricity rate for an electric version) and how much you drive. The math uses the EPA city and highway ratings, weighted by how much of your driving happens in each.
Sierra MPG Questions
Which Sierra year gets the best gas mileage?
The 2020 to 2022 Sierra 2WD holds the top EPA rating at 26 MPG combined (23 city, 30 highway). Among 2026 models, the Sierra 2WD is rated at 25 MPG combined.
What's the best gas mileage from a non-hybrid Sierra?
The 2020 to 2022 Sierra 2WD with the 3.0L 6-cylinder diesel and rear-wheel drive is rated at 26 MPG combined (23 city, 30 highway).
Is there still a gas-only Sierra?
Yes. The 2026 Sierra lineup includes 18 gas-only versions, rated 15 to 20 MPG combined.
Does four-wheel drive hurt Sierra fuel economy?
A little. On the 2026 Sierra, the best rear-wheel drive version is rated at 20 MPG combined and the best four-wheel drive version at 18 MPG.
How efficient is the electric Sierra?
The most efficient 2026 SIERRA EV Ext Range (11kW Charger) is rated at 68 MPGe combined, which works out to 49.5 kWh per 100 miles. Its EPA range is 410 miles. Range across 2026 versions runs from 283 to 410 miles.
Why doesn't my Sierra match the EPA numbers?
EPA tests assume about 300 pounds of passengers and cargo, flat roads and no trailer, and four-wheel-drive trucks are tested in two-wheel drive. Towing, hauling, hills, idling, speed, cold weather and tire pressure all pull real-world numbers down. Use the ratings to compare one truck with another, and track your own with the MPG calculator.

Where These Numbers Come From
Every figure on this page comes from the U.S. EPA fuel economy dataset on fueleconomy.gov, pulled together by Cedrick Reese. The file lists 783 ratings for the GMC Sierra from 1989 to 2026. Each row in the table links to the matching EPA vehicle record, so you can check any figure against the source. Ratings from before 2008 use the EPA's revised estimates, which put older vehicles on the same scale as newer ones. Electric versions are rated in MPGe, the EPA's miles-per-gallon equivalent, and the table also shows their official range. When the EPA posts an updated file with new model years or corrected ratings, this page is rebuilt from it. The cost calculator uses the gas or electricity price you enter rather than a national average, so the result fits where you live.
Ratings on this page come from the EPA file downloaded on October 1, 2026.
