Here's the official EPA Ford Ranger MPG for every engine and drivetrain from 1984 to 2026.
Ranger MPG by Year and Version
The EPA has rated 347 configurations of the Ranger across gas, electric and diesel versions. Trucks come in a lot of engine and drivetrain combinations, so pick a year to narrow the list.

Electric and hydrogen versions are rated in MPGe, so compare them with each other rather than with the MPG figures.
Ranger MPG Over the Years
Each bar shows the range of combined MPG across every Ranger configuration the EPA rated that year, from the thirstiest version to the most efficient. Hover or tap a year to see the numbers. Electric versions are rated in MPGe, so they're left out of the chart and listed in the table instead.
Years When Ranger Fuel Economy Changed
The Ranger's ratings stay flat for long stretches. These are the model years where something changed enough to matter when you're comparing used ones.
- 1999: An electric Ranger joins the lineup at 58 MPGe combined, with up to 55 miles of EPA range.
How the Ranger Compares
The EPA rated 12 full-size pickups for 2026. The best Ranger version, at 23 MPG combined, ties for 4th with 1 other model of 12. Combined ratings in the class run from 19 to 25 MPG, with a median of 22. Plug-in hybrids and electric models are ranked separately.
| Rank | Model | Combined |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chevrolet Silverado | 25 MPG |
| 1 | GMC Sierra | 25 MPG |
| 3 | Ford F150 | 24 MPG |
| 4 | Ford Ranger | 23 MPG |
| 4 | Toyota Tacoma | 23 MPG |
What Does a Ranger Cost to Fuel or Charge?
Pick a Ranger, then enter your gas price (or electricity rate for an electric version) and how much you drive. The math uses the EPA city and highway ratings, weighted by how much of your driving happens in each.
Ranger MPG Questions
Which Ranger year gets the best gas mileage?
The 1986 Ranger Pickup 2WD holds the top EPA rating at 27 MPG combined (25 city, 29 highway). Among 2026 models, the Ranger 2WD is rated at 23 MPG combined.
Is there still a gas-only Ranger?
Yes. The 2026 Ranger lineup includes 4 gas-only versions, rated 17 to 23 MPG combined.
Does four-wheel drive hurt Ranger fuel economy?
A little. On the 2026 Ranger, the best rear-wheel drive version is rated at 23 MPG combined and the best four-wheel drive version at 21 MPG.
How efficient is the electric Ranger?
The most efficient 2001 Ranger Pickup 2WD is rated at 58 MPGe combined, which works out to 58 kWh per 100 miles. Its EPA range is 50 miles.
Why doesn't my Ranger match the EPA numbers?
EPA tests assume about 300 pounds of passengers and cargo, flat roads and no trailer, and four-wheel-drive trucks are tested in two-wheel drive. Towing, hauling, hills, idling, speed, cold weather and tire pressure all pull real-world numbers down. Use the ratings to compare one truck with another, and track your own with the MPG calculator.

Where These Numbers Come From
Every figure on this page comes from the U.S. EPA fuel economy dataset on fueleconomy.gov, pulled together by Cedrick Reese. The file lists 347 ratings for the Ford Ranger from 1984 to 2026. Each row in the table links to the matching EPA vehicle record, so you can check any figure against the source. Ratings from before 2008 use the EPA's revised estimates, which put older vehicles on the same scale as newer ones. Electric versions are rated in MPGe, the EPA's miles-per-gallon equivalent, and the table also shows their official range. When the EPA posts an updated file with new model years or corrected ratings, this page is rebuilt from it. The cost calculator uses the gas or electricity price you enter rather than a national average, so the result fits where you live.
Ratings on this page come from the EPA file downloaded on October 1, 2026.
