Very good points and I appreciate you chiming in. I actually agree that GPM on national level is a more meaningful number in terms of actual oil usage, etc.

However, I am approaching this from a smaller, different perspective. I am looking at the impact on an individual or family. I want every one of my readers to feel that ANYTHING they do will lead to another success, then another success, etc. --- because it will. I keep thinking of the explanation that driving from one coast to another at night. The actual distance you can see with your headlights is only a few hundred feet, but if you concentrate on just going that next couple of hundred feet, you can eventually go the whole distance. Looking at it from this side, any thing that makes those 200 feet seem too insignificant to worry about will derail people as they are first starting out. A good habit needs to be carefully nurtured, not made insignificant by statistics.

Please feel free to fire back or add another dimension. We need to start and keep people talking!

The problem with MPG is that it leads to misperceptions in judging efficiency improvements: Changing a car from 33 MPG to 50 looks worthwhile, whereas a change from 14 MPG to 20 looks less valuable. However, the latter change saves about 200 gallons of gas over 10,000 miles; the former change saves only 100 gallons.

If the main problem with gpm is that it makes numbers look small, this can be fixed by using a larger base than is used by the Europeans: Use 10,000 miles (or 15,000 miles), not 100 miles.

For more on the illusions caused by MPG and the benefits of "gallons per 10,000 miles" see this webpage:

People in canada ...
People in canada have been plugging their cars in for decades during the winter.
Why?
Because if you don't plug in the engine won't start. Too cold out.

So i don't think canadians would care if they had to plug their cars in every day.
:-P

So yeah, people who say "i am wary about plugging my car in" don't know what they are talking about.

I can't believe that dumb would even say that.
